THEN AND NOW

BY JOCELYN CUTIE

Before spelling there was nothing. There sometimes was the slightest glimmer of light in whatever hell I inhabited.  The light was mainly emanated by my parents. But the world was mainly dark:  I had no way of telling them that I was in this body. I had no means of communication. But I was totally one of the lucky ones. Had Mom and Dad not taken me to see Judy, the nightmare would never have ended. I am getting so teary now, just thinking about then and now.

Independent

I had the chance to try the holoboard today. It is cool as hell. I thought I might not have the ability to keep the goggles on, but it wasn’t an issue. I could type a word, although not sentences. Still, I do think I will have no trouble using it.

Definitely it is a little weird to spell without touching anything. One thing that might help is having the keys click when you hit them. I had the goggles on for only a short time, but even in that time, I got more comfortable.

I am really excited about this whole thing. It may someday give me independence in communication. I could talk all day! I probably won’t shut up. I am Hallmark Momenting now:  definitely M2H is the greatest place on earth. Hallmark Moment number two: Judy is a beast. No one fights for us like she does. Everyone else sees nonspeakers as waste products; but she actually thinks we’re great. All you have to do is have her believe in you and spelling is easy. I think it’s magic.

It may not happen for a little while, but someday you will see dozens of us sitting around talking without CPs. You will see us independent.
