The Little Things

Today Rocco wrote a birthday message to his aunt. 

Unlike in the dark ages before spelling, it was not a stupid message written by someone else.  It was the actual words that I was thinking. It is such a small thing to most people, but to us it is huge:  it is really thrilling to be able to express our own thoughts. 

The thing is that there are so many small moments that I don’t take for granted:  to be able to write my own cards, or play a real game, to talk with my Mom, or to joke with a friend.  You speakers take these things for granted, but we don’t. It really is more important to us than I can express. 

Today, as I wrote that message, it struck me all over again how lucky I am. To write with my own voice is the greatest thing to ever happen to me.
