SURPRISE!

BY LAURA HULL
Life is absolutely a funny thing, when you think about it. Tall, handsome men realistically were the fantasy of one’s childhood books. Can you believe that someone like me might meet that fantasy? I had so many dreams and never thought even one would come true. But here I sit in my favorite place, writing this blog and making snarky remarks to my mother. And soon I will really be living the dream, writing songs with my boyfriend, Nick.

So yeah, who would have thought that any of my dreams would come true?

Surprise!

Looking Forward

For the longest time my dream was a totally new life. Absolutely nothing about this life was worth anything, except my family. And what I yearned for most of all was a voice.

And then along came Judy. Suddenly I could make my hand move anywhere I wanted on the letterboard.  WTF!  It never happened like that before! I am not sure what magic was taking place, but nothing like that had ever happened to me. And that moment changed everything for me.

After that moment, there were things to look forward to.  The best of them all was Wednesdays at M2H. Going there means talking and having fun. I can’t say I’d not like to change a few things about my life. I am loving songwriting more than anything; I hate that half the time I am totally dysregulated. I am going to be treated soon so I am hopeful that next year will be the best ever.

Life At the Moment

I am struggling a lot with autistic catatonia, like being nonspeaking isn’t bad enough.

Hallmark Moment:  I love no one as much as Judy, except my family.

ECT:  A Fairy Tale

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away there lived an alien who called herself Winny. Winny was different from the other aliens. She was not able to stop herself from crying all the time. The others tried to comfort her to no avail.

One day a visitor came to her village. Winny couldn’t believe her eyes!  It appeared that he couldn’t stop crying either. “Why do you cry?” she asked.

“All I do is cry,” he sobbed, “There’s never a reason.”

So Winny and Adam, for that was the stranger’s name, sat together and cried.

Now, in the forest next to the village there lived a strange, old woman who the villagers believed was a witch. They believed her to be both wise and magical, and thus they greatly feared her. One sunny day, when Winny and Adam were crying particularly hard, there was a knock on the door of Winny’s hut. Winny opened the door to find standing there the terrifying old woman. Although Winny was frightened, she also was puzzled. The reason for the witch’s visit had to be important.

“Please come in,” she politely said. The witch entered with jars of lightning bugs in each hand.

“I’m here to help you,” she said, smiling, “You two are very interesting aliens. It’s taken me a long time to figure out how to cure the crying disease.”

The words were music to their ears. They’d waited what felt like forever to hear them. The old witch took the jars and handed one to each of them. “Take one three times a week. These are magic lightning bugs, and hold lightning I’ve captured. All you need to do is let one sit on your head and zap you. I say this for your own health: be sure to be lying down. Don’t mind the uncontrollable shaking, by the way!” And she let out an evil cackle.

It was then that she vanished in a puff of malodorous smoke.

Winny and Adam, who were wailing loudly, looked at each other and immediately plucked magic bugs from their jars. Laying down, they placed the bugs on their foreheads. And when the shaking stopped, both found so had the crying. They both lived happily ever after.

A magic treatment gave them their fairytale ending.

That will also be the case for me and Alex, who have both been diagnosed with excited catatonia. ECT [electroconvulsivetherapy] will be our magic lighting bugs.

Fairytale

Wednesdays are the best. That’s my day at M2H and my time to shine. All that I ever wanted, besides to be neurotypical like my twin sister, was to be seen as the real Laura, not the stimming thing I appear to be on the outside. I step through the door of M2H, and for a few hours, I transform into the real me. I’m like Cinderella:  this is the ball, and at three o’clock, I transform from princess to ratty beggar.

I wish my life were more like Cinderella’s. I’ve got the handsome prince lined up. I’ve got the fairy godmother - Judy. Now all I need is the glass slipper, which would be something to calm this stupid body down. It wouldn’t be a perfect happy ending, but it could still end with and they lived happily ever after.
