SPEAKING FOR MYSELF...

BY ALEX GORMAN
I am definitely the luckiest person on the face of the earth.  Each day we nonspeakers can easily choose to feel sorry for ourselves. But nothing really easy is ever as good, I believe.  To be happy is not an easy choice, but it's one I choose to make.  Easy things are what some gravitate towards...but not me. The best things in my life, and the people I love most, have either been the hardest or worked the hardest. And these things, the hardest, feel the best because they represent achievement.  This blog is about being lucky, working hard, achieving goals, and being what I've decided to be:  happy.

A Job

I am apparently obsessing at the moment, wishing I could have a real job. Reading all the anti-cure hatred, and feeling so angry about it, is making me think about what I would do if a miracle happened and I was cured. I am awesomely smart, and would want to use that to make the world a better place. Wondering about it though makes me upset, because I am so dependent upon others that it will never happen. I could have made a difference.  Now…all wasted. I am definitely depressed at these thoughts. And then I think about all those people who want to deny me a cure, and I am filled with fury.

I am so longing to contribute to this cause, and our country, that my heart aches. Their spite is our tragedy.

Dear Alex,

I share and respect your anger.

But I don’t believe you have not already made an enormous contribution with lasting impact. And that is the dramatic difference in the lives of many spellers, their families, and friends.

I know this firsthand. Just ask Joss or Chris. From our very first visit to M2H, you welcomed and inspired the three of us. Joss and so many of your fellow M2Hers, spellers and loved ones, have expressed similar feelings- inspired by you and your mom.

My friend, you do have a “real job”—and you do it so well—you lead by example.

With much love and appreciation,

Jim

From where I am sitting, you do have a job, Alex. It is by far the most important one that I can think of. You lead the way for all those who come after you. It is on your shoulders that Leon and the likes of him stand. It is because of everything you have done that nonspeaking children stand a chance at a bright future. Their families finally have hope. You have paved the way for us. You inspire us. You provide us with the roadmap. Keep going, my friend. Every word you write, changes a life. There are many hearts full of gratitude for the work you do.

In the future, when nonspeakers do access neurotypical jobs with medical advances, and changes in technology. It'll be because of you. You made it possible for those who came after you. For that, you will go down in history. Your efforts are not in vain.
