SMILING

BY RYAN HUGHES

My name is Ryan Hughes and I can’t believe I am writing my own blog. About 15 months ago I was at a showing of the documentary, Spellers, and I met Judy. It was the moment that changed my life. I have gone from living in a hell of loneliness to smiling as I sit here writing my own blog. I can’t stop smiling when I am here at Mouth to Hand.

My Goal

My sister is a senior and will soon be getting her diploma and going to college. I’m the big brother: it should have been me first. Today I asked Judy how Alex got his diploma. I learned that he studied for 18 months before he took the high school equivalency exam. It was Judy’s determination that got him there.

My Mom is also determined, so I know I will get it eventually. It hurts though that Kira is getting it first. It hurts that I am watching her visiting colleges and picking which one to go to. I am so angry and jealous.

We are incredibly intelligent. We deserve to be educated too. It is just so unfair that we are treated like idiots everywhere but Mouth to Hand.

I believe that I will get my diploma. I will follow in Alex’s footsteps. And that will show everyone who thought I was stupid just how wrong they were.

I am blown away with happiness for you Ryan. I went to college with your mother and played softball in college with your mother. She is one of my best friends whom I don't see as often as I would like. I reconnected with your mother when we bumped into eachother at Hawthorne Country Day School, where I worked, and you went to school. I kept my eye on you as well and made sure you were always good. I want you to know how happy I am for not only you, but for your mother, who advocated for you every minute of the day. That was who she was, always wanting nothing but the best for you. One day I will meet you again and tell you in person how unbelievably smart, creative and incredible you are. Keep striving and thriving, you will earn your GED in no time. Everyone believes in YOU. :) Barb Phillips

Thank you Barb. That was beautiful, left me all choked up. XO

Ryan,

I read your words and immediately thought of your two Grandfathers who whenever faced with injustice stood up, spoke up and took action.

You are on the road to achieving your dreams, this takes faith, hard work, persistence, patience and continuous dedication. We are all in this together. To quote one of your Grandfather. “Don’t get mad, get even”.

Love,

Dad
