SEEING THE SUN

BY PAUL KLEIN
All my life I prayed for a miracle: to have a voice. My thoughts were mine alone, and that is the loneliest thing on earth. The first day I met Judy was like the first day I saw the sun. Within minutes I was talking to her on the laminate. I could talk! My world opened up, like a flower unfolding. Now all those thoughts that were trapped inside are bubbling out, like a soda can that’s been shaken. What is more precious than talking? What is more precious than friends? What is more precious than sharing who we are with each other?

Zebras

Who told the story about zebras being the anomaly when you hear hoofbeats? We are the zebras. Yes, we are unexpected perhaps. But even the common is not always what you expect.

I have been typing for years now and still I want to persistently be seen for who I really am. That seems to be impossible though. More and more nonspeakers walk into Mouth to Hand and learn to type. But we are still seen by everyone as kind of super cognitively impaired. It doesn’t matter what we accomplish. All of us step outside these doors, and we become horses: people expect us to be cognitively impaired, so that’s how they see us.

The problem with that old adage is that it doesn’t allow for the possibility of zebras. It never seems that people can see something new. They expect to see horses, so when a zebra strolls right by them they ignore the stripes staring them in the face, and call it a horse.
We are a huge and growing herd of zebras. I hope that at some point the thunder of our hoofbeats allows us to be seen.
