NO MORE WALLS

BY AJ KOOLURIS
My name is AJ and I am saved.
I am 16 and until a short time ago, I couldn’t talk. School is a nightmare, and that is what I thought my life would be like forever. Enter Mouth to Hand: walls tumbled down! Thanks to Debbie and Judy, I am free.

Destination Pleasantville

Pleasantville is my destination when I am feeling damned down.  I love it because it makes me feel teacher friendly. I get emotional when I think about love, because the teachers in Pleasantville loved me.  Knowing that loving teachers are far and few between, farthest from my mind are the bad teachers who tried to ruin me.  Having Pleasantville to visit makes my thoughts relax.  I wish I still lived there.  I have to say, I really love Pleasantville.

Anxiety

There is going to be very new technology for us someday. I got to try the holoboard today. The thing is, I couldn’t keep the goggles on. The sensory thing got to me. I am worried that I won’t be able to use anything because of that. I wrongfully thought that it wouldn’t be an issue. Intellectually I know that I need to keep them on, but the sensory anxiety was unbearable.

Trying new things right now is hard. I want this stupid anxiety to stop. It’s keeping me from doing things I want to do. I can’t enjoy things I really should be loving. I’m in classes here that are awesome. I see everyone else having so much fun. I’m wracked with anxiety though so definitely am unable to really have fun.

I’m totally getting disheartened. I hope my doctor can help me.

Angry

So I am finally done with school. I get that things will change. I need to figure out how to get truly educated. I got zero education in school. I want to learn material like my brother does. I am so intelligent, and it was so unfair that I learned nothing in school.

I want to take math, science, literature and music appreciation here. I want to learn and learn, and get my diploma someday. I want to go to college. I want to have what other people who are speakers have.

I feel like we get screwed on two levels. First we get stuck with stupid dyspraxia. Then we lose out on all the things everyone else gets. It is so unfair. I usually don’t get mad…but graduating high school with a stupid certificate of completion pissed me off. I am smarter than most of the people who graduated for real.

Someday I will manage to get my real diploma. I utterly will be like my friend, Alex. He is everyone’s idol here. Then I will finally not feel angry anymore.

Driving With Mom is Fun

Year after year I have suffered my Mom's relentless engagement of idiot drivers.  Hate to say it,  but she has the worst potty mouth.  Rarely a trip goes by without some form of an outburst.  I totally get where she's coming from.  It's a problem from the standpoint that cursing is not ok, but these butthead drivers deserve it.  I guess it makes her feel better, and my vocabulary now has many colors.  Take a drive with my Mom and see for yourself.

The Beginning of a New Day

I am feeling hopeful.  I have a new doctor and I am going to try a new med.  Knowing that I can do better is really what I need to hear right now.  Anxiety is the very worst.

105 Days to Go

I hate school. Having to go there every day sucks. All I do there is asinine. Demeaning work is the norm. And I get no relief from the stupid. All I want to do is be here at Mouth to Hand. All the time I am here there is no condescension. Here, I get to be smart. Here, no one thinks I am nothing but a disability. Here people get to learn real stuff like math and poetry. Here people have friends. Here people have fun.

All my life I wanted to learn, have friends and fun. For all my life I wanted to talk. Were it not for school, I would be living the dream.

There is only three and half months of school left. I am counting the days.
