MUSINGS

By Luke Gilmore

I am not a comedian nor am I concerned with being totally witty. I am not concerned with boosting my ego, or developing groupies. My blog is about my thoughts as a nonspeaker. I think about things deeply. I mull and ponder and ruminate and brood. So I thought it might be of general interest to share these musings.

Scary Me

Finding people who are the type to learn to love us is hard. Maybe a lot of people are willing to work with us, but not a lot are capable of loving us. After all, we are scary. People see me and are terrified: I am a very big man. I can tell when people are frightened of me, and it hurts more than I can say. All my adult life I’ve had to contend with that fear, and it has scarred me.

I have been thinking about this recently, and realize that I have healed a lot these past few years. I think it’s a combination of things. Firstly, of course, being able to talk has allowed me to vent rather than being bottled up inside. Secondly, walking into M2H is healing: no one here is afraid of any of us. I will Hallmark Moment for a second. Judy was genuinely shocked to learn I had been feared. That says more to me than I can put into words.

Finally, listening to the cheers every time I walk in here reminds me to not care what people think about me outside these walls. “So what if they are scared of me?” I can now say to myself, “In here I am known and seen and never feared.”

The fact is I will always be intimidating to those who don’t know me. But now it doesn’t hurt anymore.

Dear Luke,

The people who don’t take the time to get to know you are missing out. One of my Hallmark Moments each week comes on Thursday afternoons when I get to enjoy you, Joss, Alex and company banter back and forth about books and other issues with Judy. I enjoy your wit and humor.

Jim

Dear sweet Luke
I love seeing your thoughts- they are so enlightening for those of us learning about what many non speakers must feel. Your thoughts will help so many with their own misunderstandings about non speakers and help us to have improved interactions due to better understanding and insight.
It warms my heart deeply- knowing that you are able to tell the world your thoughts and express your feelings.
Keep your great thoughts coming!

Luke you are a breath of fresh air! You are speaking a truth that man many people are too afraid to talk about. Unfortunately there are people who are afraid of what they understand and they’re ignorant. By writing your truths not only are you helping to teach other people, you are waking up those of us who need to reach out more even when we are not afraid. You are not “different” Luke, you are very special and you are also very brave! Keep writing!
