MUSINGS

By Luke Gilmore

I am not a comedian nor am I concerned with being totally witty. I am not concerned with boosting my ego, or developing groupies. My blog is about my thoughts as a nonspeaker. I think about things deeply. I mull and ponder and ruminate and brood. So I thought it might be of general interest to share these musings.

An M2H New  Year!

I arrived here today to find that Judy had opened the new space downstairs. It looks amazing. I can’t even imagine how much work she must have done over the break to get it ready for today. Certainly a lot, by the looks of it. There will be new classes there soon too, including dance, which I want to take. Already I am excited about getting into these classes. That’s the thing about M2H:  there are always things to look forward to. Before M2H there was just nothing to look forward to except for a lifetime of daycare. I had no hope of interesting anything. Now I have so much to look forward to, I don’t know where to start.

There are the classes here, like math and science and poetry and book club. There are the events like the dance and the gala, the holiday party and the publication of the magazine. The capable staff here makes everything fun and educational. If this place ceased to exist, I can’t imagine what my life would look like. Awkward to admit it perhaps, but I have nightmares sometimes about that.

I believe that M2H is the greatest thing to happen to me and other nonspeakers. So on this momentous day, let me raise a figurative toast to M2H and Judy. Feeling great about 2025!

My New Year's Resolution

It may come as a surprise to my family that I love dancing. Yesterday was the M2H holiday party, and I had the absolute best time. Happily, Judy dragged me to the dance floor, and I had the greatest time. I was kind of surprised myself to find that it was fun.

And that brings me to the main point of this post. I’m starting to realize that I’m feeling, a lot of the time, that I need to try new things. It doesn’t matter how absolutely awful I am at first. All that matters is that I try.

It was funny watching everyone dance yesterday, not giving a damn how they looked. For example, at one point Judy got everyone into a circle, and Vinny just stood in the middle doing his own thing. He felt no embarrassment, and no one cared that he was not joining the circle. It was truly a no-judgement-zone.

I had myself convinced that dancing wouldn’t be fun because I’m not exactly light on my feet. But it turned out that I was totally wrong. I am now thinking that there are probably loads of things to try. I am kind of excited to try new things this coming year. That is my New Year’s Resolution.

Before and After

Having been spelling for a few years now has me thinking a lot about before and after. Before there was so much noise in my mind that I couldn’t think. After feels heavenly because I have quiet in my mind. The quiet allows me to think, talk and connect to others. I am sure it was Judy forcing my brain to connect with hers that quieted my mind. The quiet in my mind made it possible to think which, in turn, helped me to regulate myself. Allowing me to think has changed my life, because I can talk and learn.  Also, I can remember now; I don’t remember a lot from before.  Before was like living a half life; after is living a real life.
