MUSINGS

By Luke Gilmore

I am not a comedian nor am I concerned with being totally witty. I am not concerned with boosting my ego, or developing groupies. My blog is about my thoughts as a nonspeaker. I think about things deeply. I mull and ponder and ruminate and brood. So I thought it might be of general interest to share these musings.

We Are Everywhere

I was surprised to walk in today to find a visitor. Her name is Rena Roberman and she is from Israel. Immediately I began to think about how international our community really is. Her son is a speller, and is able to spell in Hebrew.  It’s weird but…I never thought about spelling in other alphabets. It suddenly occurs to me that there are spellers in every country who are in the same situation as us. That makes me incredibly sad:  there are so many of us. Too many. All over the world, people are suffering in silence. It’s unbearable to think about it.

It makes me realize just how lucky I am. I have to help them to find their way to freedom. But I don’t know how.

Father's Day Brood

Yesterday was Father’s Day, and that reminded me of fathers who are absent. One of my best friends has no father:  he walked out on them almost twenty years ago. My anger overwhelms me sometimes. WTF is wrong with people sometimes? I have been brooding over this question for months.

Months ago I asked my own father why men leave their families more than mothers. He gave me several reasons including biological wiring and sociological differences in men’s roles versus women’s. He didn’t have a reason that satisfied me though. I can understand that we are difficult to care for. I cannot understand the lack of love for your own children.

My friend’s father has not seen his children in years and years. What the hell?
