ME INSIDE

BY DANIELE ERMINI
I am the most happy and grateful guy at Mouth to Hand. I am sitting here today because my Mom never gave up on me, and Judy saw the real me inside this body. I met Judy at our doctor’s office, and right there and then she said that I am in here. Being here at Mouth to Hand is the greatest thing to ever happen to me!

Mont Blanc

Having the ability to study poetry here at Mouth to Hand is my favorite thing. No one ever taught me like I am intelligent before so that, in and of itself, is beyond awesome. But add to that Coleridge and Wordsworth and Shelley, and you have the best hour of the week.

Currently we are studying Shelley, and we finished Mont Blanc last week. It made me feel totally like I was there with Shelley, gazing up at the mountain. I could practically hear the rushing water of the Arve River. I thought, as Judy read it, of my own insignificance, but it wasn’t a depressing thought. Happiness flooded me because this world is indestructible. The Alps were there for eons…and will be there for eons.

Somehow that idea made me feel tiny, but also a part of nature. And nature is absolutely beautiful.  So, lovely things are happiness.

There are no words to describe how much I loved that poem.

This Place

What is better than being at Mouth to Hand studying poetry with friends? Absolutely nothing! The best day of my week is Thursday, when I come to poetry class. It is literally like a dream come true.

In school I learn zero, because they believe I am cognitively disabled.  And then I walk into M2H, and Judy teaches me about Wordsworth and Langston Hughes. We got to watch real college lectures about Hughes, given by Judy’s brother, Professor David. So here I am treated like I understand college-level work (which I do!), while at school I am treated like a preschooler.

School will be over soon, and then what will my life look like? I hope it will look like Mouth to Hand! This is the only place I want to be. I hope with all my heart that it does not involve daycare, because I don’t think I could bear that. It would be just like school, but for the rest of my life. In other words, it would be hell.

Here we are seen for who we really are, and we are treated like normal folks. That is all I am asking for, at this point. I want to be here to learn and have friends. All my life I dreamed of a place like this. Getting to come here more would make Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday just as wonderful as Thursday:  a total dream come true.
