MATTER OVER MIND

BY JULIAN MUNOZ

My name is Julian Munoz, and I am sane. Why I am starting with that declaration: I have that kind of sense that tells me that people tend to equate autism with insanity. Autism affects my ability to control my body with my mind. The thinking part of my mind works perfectly. Unfortunately, that thinking part is not in control. We, the nonspeaking, get lumped in with the insane too often. Our outward appearance throws people. Were they to spend time with us, they would realize we are rational. What rationally has me writing this blog is the desire to set people straight.

Thank You For Listening

That people take the time to read our blogs makes me beyond happy. For all those years that I couldn’t talk, I really wanted my thoughts heard by others. It is incredibly lonely to never be able to talk to anyone else. There was absolutely no way for me to tell anyone that I am in here. Imagine then how I feel knowing that my words are reaching others. Definitely joy is too weak a word. All my life I dreamed of this. Can I express just how blessed I feel right now? Happy doesn’t come close to cutting it. Wishes can come true.

Today we know that apparently people read our blogs. I find that very thrilling. Through all those years of silence, my hope was to make people hear me:  wanting to feel an open voice for a voice I believed I’d never have. So may all those people hear us speaking? There totally appears to be an actual audience for us. To me this feels miraculous. Year after year with no one hearing my thoughts, and now hundreds of people hearing them. To be able to share my thoughts is a gift that is so huge that, ironically, there are no words. We are finally being seen. I am, in my mind, walking the red carpet to the Oscars or something. It’s like coming to truly exist after thirty years of being in limbo.

Sad No Longer

We nonspeakers may have had the saddest early lives, but those of us lucky enough to come to M2H are sad no longer. All I ever wanted, that could actually happen, was to have a place to go where I was seen by the staff as intelligent. M2H is that place. When anyone walks in, speaker or nonspeaker, they are greeted with so much love and warmth that it feels so much like I am in Eden. They believe in person-centered teaching: I believe I am valued and not feared, in that they feel joy when I come in.  Everyone has perfect happiness to experience at M2H, and there is no other place I’ve ever gone where I feel this.

No More Baby Talk!

We were all so tired of being treated like morons before M2H. That baby voice we were subjected to all our lives has scarred many of us. Worse still was the use of the word we:  no “we” were not going to put our hands down. You cannot understand how humiliating that feels, to be seen as though you have the mind of a toddler, forever. Judy once yelled at a teacher who talked to us that way, and I am psyched to hear it.

Really we do need people to champion our cause. I cannot yell at people myself, so I need help from speakers like Judy to yell for me. So the next time you hear someone talk to us like we are idiots, explain to them that we understand everything and just can’t talk with our mouths. Maybe point out that Stephen Hawking couldn’t either. The world’s perception of nonspeakers needs to change.
