HERE I AM

BY MICHAEL HANSEN
My name is Michael Hansen, and Judy saved me. I could not do this: I was stuck, and more and more angry. It seemed like everyone else could type except me. But one day Judy figured it out. Suddenly I could type! It was the happiest day of my life.  And now here I am writing a blog!
Miracles can happen.

Lucky Me

I am really a more fortunate person than it may appear at first glance. Almost everyone sees that I am disabled as soon as they see me. But what they don’t see is that I am incredibly intelligent. They don’t see that I have a way of talking. They don’t see my awesome family. They are not people who are actually partial to getting to know people with disabilities. (I can tell when people are not comfortable with me. I always sense it.)

I always eagerly await my sessions with Judy. She is the teacher I always dreamed of. She believes in me so incredibly much that I can do things I thought impossible.

I always think myself luckier than most people think.

Choices

Today I learned that Alex told Judy that he wants to go see the Yankees for his birthday. He told her. That blew me away. I have never had the opportunity to do that. I am making that a goal this year. I want to choose stuff. I am really excited about the idea of choice.

Before we can talk there are no choices. Everything is dictated to us. Almost every moment of every day is dictated. I can talk now, and I am capable of making decisions.

So this birthday, I am picking my present. I am picking more stuff than I want. I am psyched.

New Me

It is a New Year and I am a new Michael. For all my life, I was mostly just cognitively impaired Michael.  But I am a new and better version of myself.  New Michael is really smart and will show that to everyone. And soon I believe he will talk so much that his mother will tell him to shut up.
