BLESSED

By Liam Collins
I am one of the most motor impaired student at M2H. This is incredibly difficult for me. Even after 4 years, this is still a struggle. I very much envy my peers who spell so effortlessly. That said, I also get how lucky I am. There are millions of nonspeakers who have no way to communicate. That thought haunts me. There but for the grace of God…

We totally are blessed.

My Diagnosis

It’s time that we stopped making some things sound nicer than they are. They sound so like they are benign, but  they are not. What I am referring to is the word autism. Questions about what the word means abound. These days more and more people proudly brag that they have autism, since suddenly it has become fashionable. I am sick of it.  Profound autism is the new name for us. Of course, that will imply cognitive impairment.

There totally needs to be an acknowledgement of what we actually have:  a motor disorder. That is the only thing I will accept as my diagnosis.

Keep blogging Liam! You guys are the trailblazers--there will be a tipping point where everyone will know it's a motor impairment and not a cognitive one. And by the way, I also feel disgusted by those who think it's "fashionable" to be autistic.

Thank you so much for sharing. It’s so important that your voice is heard. As a mother to a nonspeaking child who faces significant motor challenges and often finds spelling difficult, I deeply understand how important it is to shed light on these realities. The world still has a long way to go, but with people like you advocating for those who haven’t yet found their voices, I feel hopeful.
