A GIRL'S HEART

BY KAITLIN FLAHERTY

Almost all nonspeakers are male. Here at M2H, I am in a poetry club:  me and five guys. I am in a book club:  me and four guys. I am in a math club…me and a bunch of guys. There are only a handful of girls here, amid a sea of boys. This place is swimming in testosterone. I am thankful that so many of these men are my friends. And of course I have the best boyfriend on earth. But there are differences in the perspectives of men and women. As a nonspeaking woman, I have experiences and thoughts that are only feminine in nature.

Of course there are many things in common among us nonspeakers. But in this blog, I’ll talk from my girl’s heart.

Cute is Cute

I am laughing as I spell this:  of course I must make my first post about boys. I guess most girls in their twenties are interested in boys. Nonspeakers are no different. I have to say that sometimes the differences between speakers and nonspeakers are nonexistent. Just as speaking girls will check out the cute guys they see, so will we nonspeaking girls. It happened that I saw Alex first, so the other girls lost out. He is gorgeous, if I don’t say so myself. He is also the most brilliant person I have ever met, and the funniest. He is the most amazing person on earth. And like me, he is nonspeaking.

We nonspeakers are not prejudiced against you speakers. Cute is cute, speaking or not. I am going out on a limb here, but I reckon that most girls who see Alex will think he is incredibly handsome. Being nonspeaking means that our bodies do not listen to our brains. But there is nothing wrong with our eyes. No one would argue that he is handsome: the difference is that a speaker would look past it, and use her eyes to see only his disability. I don’t have her blindness. I can see cuteness in all its guises.

Kaitlin, Thank you for your all girl insights on boys. When it comes to affairs of the heart we are all just a big mush. You and Alex are a beautiful couple and have so much in common to be grateful for. So happy for you that you put your claims on him first. I think you are both a great catch.
